How can I analyse Grade Distributions of my Assessments and Strands?

What is Arbor’s Grade Distribution tool?

The grade distribution tool can be found in the assessment module's Analysis pages.

The grade distribution tool lets you view the distribution of student grades for each assessment. First displaying a summary for each assessment period, you can then dig down into each period and strand of an assessment (for a summative assessment with strands). You can then perform actions for groups of students you have identified, such as emailing etc.

You can view grade distributions for Summative, Ad Hoc and Standardised Assessments. just go to Students > Assessments > Summative Tracking > Analysis > Grade Distribution, then select your assessment using the filters at the top of the page.

Using the grade distribution tool

The screenshot below shows the academic year view of a summative assessment with five strands.

1 Chart and content

By default, the chart will display the distribution of grades for your selected assessment by assessment period, as shown in the screenshot above.

If the summative assessment has strands, you can click on an assessment period in the chart (Indicated with the orange 3 in the screenshot above) and drill down to see the grade distribution by strand in a given assessment period. The screenshot below shows the grade distribution by strand for the ‘Spring 2’ assessment period.

2 Chart title

This field will always display which assessment periods have been included in a chart. This is especially useful if you want to see the grade distribution by strand and need a reminder of which assessment period you are viewing.

3 Assessment periods

Each bar in the chart represents the grades for a given assessment period. For summative assessments with strands, you can click the bar to see the grade distribution by strand.

4 Grade Key

This additional filter layer enables you to focus on a particular grade/mark when viewing a grade distribution chart. It is most useful when analysing a summative assessment that contains a wide range of grades/marks. Just click the grade to analyse the chart further.

5 Chart and Table views

The chart view is described in more detail in the sections above. When you click the ‘Table’ tab you will see a table view of the same data as displayed in the chart view. You can download/export this data by using the download button in the top right of the table view.

Identifying groups of students and available actions

As with other Arbor assessment analysis tools, you can identify groups of students based on the information in the chart. To do this, hover over one of the bars in the chart and click the `View all students’ at the bottom of the tooltip.

You will then see the list of students in a slide over. Select one or more students using the checkbox column to the left of the table and perform a number of actions as shown in the screenshot below.
