For reference - Managing Teacher Assessed Grades (TAG) for 2021 summer examinations

Please note that this guidance was relevant for 2021 only. If you would like to rank students now, you can use our Rank order feature.

In 2021, GCSE and A-level qualifications were awarded based on assessment by teachers rather than formal exams, for which schools needed to submit unranked Teacher Assessed Grades to the Awarding Organisations.

Schools could either:

  • Use the assessments area of Arbor - using Ad Hoc Assessments to generate your TAG lists
  • Use the Exams are to generate your TAG lists.

Option 1 - Using Exams

The Students > Examinations > Entries > Entries by Student Group page was used to find the entries for the time period for a particular subject.

This page was then downloaded to Excel, where you could delete unneeded columns, remove any students who aren't taking that subject by deleting the row, or separate each subject into its own sheet. You can then share the sheet and put in the grades.

You could then send them to the awarding organisation. The process for this is likely to be different for each awarding organisation, so please contact them for further information.

Option 2 - Using Assessments and the Custom Report Writer

Schools would have set up a new Ad Hoc assessment and linked it to all the subjects and student needed to generate TAGs for, as a single Annual Ad Hoc measurement.

The assessment would have been created One mark per course with a custom grade set of 1-9.

Teachers would have added the TAG grades to the marksheet in Arbor.

Schools would have then used the Custom Report Writer to add an Ad Hoc Assessment Mark column for each subject.

This report was then downloaded to Excel, where you could delete unneeded columns, remove any students who aren't taking that subject by deleting the row, or separate each subject into its own sheet.

You could then send them to the awarding organisation. The process for this is likely to be different for each awarding organisation, so please contact them for further information.

  • Thanks for this.

Is it just me though that can't see why we would use this over assessments? We need the data in Arbor so we can analyse it and send to 4matrix.

  • Hi Kate, we know not all of our schools use the Assessments area of Arbor, so doing it through exams allows you to generate these lists without needing to set any assessments up. It also includes the UCI, UPN and ULN so you don't need to worry about adding additional columns, user-defined fields etc. If you would like to use assessments to generate your lists you absolutely can!

  • Does Arbor produce any analysis for exams or does it always have to be exported?

  • Hi Catherine, it does currently have to be exported. But we are working on some features to allow you to analyse exams within Arbor. Please put any feedback you have on what you'd like to be able to analyse here: https://portal.productboard.com/arbor-education/1-arbor-development-roadmap/c/100-ks4-exams-results-analysis

  • So are the two approaches an 'either or', as you in you can do the same thing/collection of grades by the exams route or by assessment? (for example if you were more familiar and confident with the exams route?)

  • Hi Kal, that's right! You can use either method at your school - if you'd rather use the Exams area that's absolutely fine!
