How Arbor maps SEN Need Types to statutory return codes

Arbor includes a large range of SEN Need types to choose from when adding SEN Needs to a student. These have been added over time at the request of schools, so you can record a student's need in the terms your SEN team uses day to day.

The School Census asks for SEN need using one of 14 SEN type codes published by the DfE in CBDS (the DfE's common data set). Because Arbor's list is more detailed than those 14 codes, each Arbor need type carries a default census code, and Arbor uses that code when compiling your return.

These mappings were created by Arbor and are not a DfE publication or DfE policy. The 14 census codes are the DfE's. The decision about which Arbor need type maps to which census code is Arbor's own, made so that you can record needs in detail and still return a valid census code.

You can see the full list by downloading the attachment for your setting below.

In the attachment, you will find a column called “Official DfE SEN Need Type?”. This shows a code where the Arbor need type is itself one of the 14 DfE codes, and "No" where it is an Arbor need type that maps to one of them. “Mapped DfE SEN Need Type” is the code Arbor will return in the census. Example below:

To find out more on how you can report on the 4 SEN statuses we hold in Arbor in line with the DfE, please refer to the Can we report on the 4 broad areas of SEND? guide.

If your school is not a DfE school, you may see different or additional types on your site.
