Map each school's behaviour types to a common set of categories, and see how behaviour compares across every school in your trust. Behaviour Category Mapping in Arbor MAT MIS groups school-specific behaviour types into trust-wide categories, enabling consistent reporting and comparison. Trusts can use standard or custom positive and negative categories, map behaviours in bulk, analyse incidents across schools, and export reports for further analysis.
What is Behaviour Category Mapping?
Behaviour Category Mapping is a feature in Arbor MAT MIS that lets you group each school's behaviour types into broader, trust-wide categories. It lets you group standard and custom behaviours together to simplify behaviour reporting while ensuring schools retain flexibility over their behaviour policy and how it's set up in Arbor.
Grouping behaviours into categories helps you to report on how behaviour incidents compare across every school in your trust. This makes it easier to spot trends and compare behaviour data with other trust data.
This feature is easy to set up and simplifies both behavioural reporting and wider analysis of how positive and negative behaviours correlate with other factors.
Who this is for
This feature is available in MAT MIS and helps data leads, behaviour leads, or trust administrators who want a trust-wide view of behaviour and who are responsible for demonstrating oversight of behaviour outcomes across their schools.
What you can do with Behaviour Category Mapping
These pages on MAT MIS allow you to view behaviours used across your schools. You can group behaviours, either using Arbor’s default categories or by setting your own.
You may wish to group behaviours into broader categories for top-line, generalised reporting. It is also a good way to take variation into account, for example where one school uses different behaviour wording to another, yet the type of behaviour is the same.
Finally, you can get information about the behaviours and categories used across schools, and you can export the data for further analysis.
Example: You have multiple schools that have an analogous level 1 negative incident for disruptive behaviour in class set up on the School MIS (1). Mapping these to a group-wide Disruptive Behaviour category (2) lets you compare and analyse these incident types across the group (3).
Where to find it
In the MAT MIS, go to Analytics > Behaviour > Behaviour Categories.
There are three items listed in the menu:
- Category Analysis: your trust-wide report of categories
- Manage Categories: see, set, and manage the categories for your trust
- Map Behaviour Types: map each school's individual behaviour types to a category
Standard categories, and adding your own
Arbor provides a starting set of 23 standard behaviour categories: 8 positive and 15 negative, based on customer research, so every trust has a common starting point.
- You find this under Analytics > Behaviour > Behaviour Categories > Manage Categories
You're not limited to these out-of-the-box options. From Manage Categories, you can add custom categories for your trust, for example, a category like “Running Inside” as a negative category. To do this, simply click the green Add Behaviour Category button in the top right-hand corner of the Manage Categories page.
Custom behaviour categories can be both positive and negative, and you can add a description.
The Source column in the Manage Categories table makes it clear whether the Category is standard (Arbor default) or something you have set. You can also see the number of schools logging behaviours in each category and the number of behaviours in the category.
Applying Categories to behaviours (mapping)
Go to Analytics > Behaviour > Behaviour Categories > Map Behaviour Types to bulk apply a category to behaviours across multiple schools.
To do this:
- Tick the rows you want to map to the same categories
- Use the Bulk action button and select Map behaviour
- On the slide-over, you're presented with a dropdown box where you can search or browse for the Arbor or custom category you would like to apply.
- Click Apply mapping to finalise.
If you want to map a single behaviour type to a category, just click on the behaviour type and select the category on the slide-over. To add additional categories, refer to the Standard categories, and adding your own section above.
Category Analysis
Once mapped, incidents appear under their category in Category Analysis (Analytics > Behaviour > Behaviour Categories > Category Analysis).
The Category Analysis page gives you a trust-wide table of behaviour incidents, with one column per category and one row per school. From here you can:
- Filter by date range, and by category (“All categories”, or pick specific ones)
- Use Hide columns to show only the categories you care about
- Search the table
- Download the report as Excel, PDF, Word, CSV, or XML, or connect it as a Live Feed
You also have the option to move columns or filter columns to make it easier to read or compare numbers on screen. See how this works for tables in your MIS here.
