Why are there separate English, Welsh/Cymraeg and a combined language option on Welsh sites?

We have updated the language ability options for students and staff on Welsh Arbor sites so that English and Welsh/Cymraeg are now listed separately. Previously, these were combined, which meant that some AI features, like Suggest Email, could not determine which of the two languages to use.

Quick tip!

Did you know that the fastest way to draft a communication is with Arbor AI?

Whenever you see a Suggest Email or Suggest SMS, click the button and briefly outline what you want to send, select your preferred style (and even language) and create a perfectly tailored draft in seconds!

What does this affect?

This change does not affect your censuses/returns. The combined English and/or Welsh/Cymraeg option remains available on student and staff profiles for census purposes. Welsh statutory returns will continue to output English, Welsh, and English and/or Welsh as the same statutory code: English and/or Welsh (ABA).

While it is now possible to record English and Welsh individually for a student, this is not required for the census.

Language Abilities or First Languages

When setting or changing student and staff Language Abilities or First Languages on Welsh Arbor sites, you are now able to select these different options:

  • English

  • Welsh/Cymraeg

  • English and/or Welsh/Cymraeg

Any individuals who were previously recorded as English and/or Welsh/Cymraeg will not see anything change on their profile unless this is manually changed by an admin.

Custom Reports

You may notice that some of your report filters no longer work as they did previously.

Any custom Report Writer reports that previously filtered on “English and/or Welsh/Cymraeg” may no longer return the same group of students or staff, because this does not include those recorded as speaking either English or Welsh separately.

Those reports would need to include English and Welsh/Cymraeg in the filter separately, as well as the combined option, to match the same students in the report output

To replace the old filter:

  • Find and open your Custom Report (School > Custom Report Writer)
  • Click the Edit button
  • Scroll to the Filters section and click the Pencil next to the Language filter
  • On the slide-over, in the filter conditions, make sure this is set to Is one of... and include English and Welsh/Cymraeg as two separate options, as well as the combined option.
  • Click Save Changes

Censuses and Returns

These changes do not affect your census or data returns. The combined English and/or Welsh/Cymraeg option remains available on student and staff profiles for census purposes. Welsh statutory returns will continue to output English, Welsh, and English and/or Welsh as the same statutory code: English and/or Welsh (ABA).

While it is now possible to record English and Welsh individually for a person, this is not required for the census.

How do I use the Suggest email feature with the new languages?

You can generate suggested emails in either language by following these steps:

  • Go to School > Communications > Compose > Email
  • Click the green Suggest Email button in the top right corner
  • Select either English or Welsh/Cymraeg from the Language(s) dropdown
  • Fill in what you want the email to contain, and use the tick boxes to select a style
  • Click Suggest Email

Please note: the combined English and/or Welsh/Cymraeg option does not appear in the Suggest Email dropdown. You can choose to select both English and Welsh, in which case, Arbor will generate a version for each language stacked in one message.
