This is the last guide in our series on completing the Wales PLASC. You can access the other guides in the series here:

Permissions

  • To access and edit this data, you must have the School: Data Returns: Administer permission.

If you do not have this permission, ask your office staff or administrator to add it to your profile for you.

What is the Teaching of Welsh Page?

This page captures the headcount of qualified teachers and the total number of hours per week they spend teaching through the medium of Welsh, or teaching Welsh as a specific subject.

Navigation

  • Go to School > Data > Export > Data Returns.
  • Select the PLASC
  • Select Teaching of Welsh from the left-hand menu.

Visibility

This page is visible for Primary, Secondary, and Middle schools. It is hidden for Nursery and Special schools.

Using the Auto-Calculator

To streamline the reporting process, Arbor includes an automated calculator that aggregates data from your existing Staff Contracts and Course Timetables.

Important Warnings

  • Overwrite Risk: Triggering a recalculation will overwrite all existing data in this section. If you have manually added a row for a teacher not on your timetable, it will be lost.
  • Data Source: If the auto-calculator does not produce the expected results, first verify that your Staff Contracts have the correct Census Business Role and that your Course Timetables have the Welsh language use in class field correctly set. Fixing the source data and rerunning the calculator ensures long-term data consistency across the MIS

How to run it

  • Look for the blue Info Banner at the top of the page.
  • Click the Recalculate button inside the banner.
  • The system will identify eligible staff and their Welsh teaching commitments for the census week and populate the table. Data is displayed in a table grouped by the unique combination of Category, Sex, and Tenure.

Key Data Fields

For each group of teachers, you must provide (or verify) the following fields. The data is grouped by Category, Sex, and Tenure.

1. Teaching Welsh Category

You must select the specific role/qualification status for the group of teachers. Common categories include:

  • Teaching Welsh as a first language.
  • Teaching Welsh as a second language.
  • Qualified to teach Welsh but not doing so.
  • Not qualified to teach Welsh.

2. Sex and Tenure

Sex: Male or Female.

Tenure: Full-Time (FT) or Part-Time (PT).

3. Headcount

The total number of teachers that fit this specific combination of Category, Sex, and Tenure.

  • Validation: Must be a number between 1 and 99.

4. Teaching Welsh Hours

The total aggregated weekly hours taught through the medium of Welsh by this group.

  • Zero Hours Rule: If the category is "Qualified but not doing so" or "Not qualified", the hours field must be 0. If you enter hours here, the census will return an error.

Manual Entry

If the auto-calculator does not capture a specific arrangement (for example, if a teacher's timetable is not fully reflected in Arbor), you can add data manually.

  1. Click the Add button at the top right of the section.
  2. Select the Teaching Welsh Category, Sex, and Tenure from the dropdowns.
  3. Enter the Headcount and Hours.
  4. Click Create.

Editing or deleting a record

  • To Edit: Click on any row in the table to open the Edit slide-over. In this view, the Category, Sex, and Tenure are locked; to change these, you must delete the record and create a new one.

  • To Delete: A "Delete" button is available within the Edit slide-over for removing incorrect aggregations.
