The Suggest Student Summary feature summarises key data points about a student and combines them with written comments from you to produce a quick summary including attendance, behaviour, and/or attainment data. This guide explains how to generate these summaries, how to tailor them and how to share them once created.
What is the Suggest Student Summary for?
Creating a high-level summary of a student's behaviour, progress, and achievements manually can take time, requiring you to click through multiple tabs to find attendance, behaviour points, and assessment grades.
The Suggest Student Summary feature does this heavy lifting for you within seconds. Because all of this information about the student is already stored on their profile, Arbor AI can bring these together and weave in your personal notes and comments about the student to create a personalised and comprehensive summary of the student.
Furthermore, because you can set which information to include and who the audience is, you can use this feature to prepare for a large variety of occasions.
Use cases include quickly preparing for parent evenings, pastoral interventions, or compiling a brief overview for a colleague, as the summary will also automatically provide insights on how to address areas where the student is not performing as expected.
Who can access this feature?
Any staff member can get access to Arbor AI features if they have the right permission. All schools get access to a free allowance of AI credit each month to use as they see fit.
If you cannot see the Ask Arbor button or specific AI features mentioned in this guide, but believe you need access for your role or want to enquire about getting access, please contact your school's admin team and refer them to this guidance on managing AI permissions.
How to generate a Student Summary
- Navigate to the main page of a student's profile (you need to be able to access the student's profile to use the feature)
- Click the Suggest Student Summary button that appears at the top of the main profile page.
- The Suggest Student Summary pop-up will appear.
- On this screen, select what to include in the summary. You can:
- Use the tick boxes to include or exclude Attendance, Behaviour or Attainment data in the summary (untick to exclude)
- Select a Target audience from the drop-down. Choose between Parent/Guardians, School Staff and the Student. Setting a target audience influences who the summary is addressed to, the language of the summary and the things Arbor AI highlights in the summary.
- Use the Write a few words about... box to add optional comments to personalise the summary. What you write here influences both what is included in the summary and helps add context for the data-based observations Arbor AI includes.
- Choose one or more Languages for the suggested summary. If you select multiple, we will generate a version for each language stacked in one summary. If you do not select a language, the default language (English) will be used.
- Click Suggest Student Summary
- Arbor will then generate the summary and show it to you in the pop-up
Sharing and retrieving
Once generated, you can either turn the summary into an email (draft) or you can add it to the student's profile as a pastoral note using the Share Summary button on the pop-up.
Once you select an option, this creates a draft note or email.
You can freely edit the email or pastoral note drafts after they have been generated. This allows you to edit or add to the AI summary before you share this with others or log this on the student's profile
- If you chose to log the summary as a pastoral note, click Save Changes to log it on the student's profile.
- If you chose email, click Save draft to save a copy of the email without sending it to anyone or click Porceed to actually send the summary to someone.
Can I find a Student Summary I forgot to save as an email or note?
Any summaries that you have created can be found in your school's AI logs under School > Arbor AI > AI Activity Log. Anyone with the School: Arbor AI: Administer Arbor AI can access this page.
Please note: it is not possible to convert AI Activity Logs to Pastoral Notes or Emails with the click of a button. If you also want to log a summary found here as a note or email, you will need to copy the text and do so manually.
