Roll out assessment School target rules and judgements for schools from the MAT MIS

This article explains how MAT Assessment Leads can standardize assessment management across their trust using the MAT MIS. It details the process for setting and rolling out school target rules and target judgement rules, allowing for efficient target management and visual assessment tracking. The article also highlights prerequisites for rolling out these features and provides step-by-step instructions for implementation.

With our assessment features in MAT MIS, MAT Assessment Leads can standardise the way you manage assessments across your trust. In this article, you’ll find out how to set targets for assessments across your trust, saving lots of set-up time.

This allows you to use our central analysis page on the MAT MIS, or to quickly roll out new assessments if your strategies change mid-year - just roll out new assessments, then use our marks migrator.

Assessment rollout is not available on our MAT Essentials Tier. Want to upgrade or find out what package you’re on? Just get in contact with our Partnership Team by emailing customersales@arbor-education.com

Setting up school target rules for all schools

School target rules can be used to automatically set targets for groups of students within an assessment so that these don’t have to be set manually. From the MAT MIS, you can roll out assessment targets to multiple schools within your trust by copying your targets from one school to the rest.

Before rolling out School target rules

To be able to set School target rules in bulk, make sure:

  1. The assessments you want to set School target rules for have been set up on all the right sites - we can only set targets for assessments that are already set up. If you haven't yet set them up on all sites, we recommend using our assessment policy rollout tool. You can also import them individually or set them up from scratch on each site if you prefer.
  2. School target rules have been set up on a school's site for all the assessments you want to roll our School target rules for (you'll need to have permission to log into a school site).
  3. The assessments at your target school don't already have targets set - you'll need to remove them if they do, to prevent multiple targets.

How to roll out the targets

To roll out the targets, go to Administration > Assessment > Framework > School Target Rules.

First, select the school you have already set School target rules for.

Next, select the School target rules you want to copy. You can select multiple targets, but please note all the target assessments in the target schools need to have been set up.

Finally, you'll be able to see which schools already have these targets set up, and select the schools to copy these targets to. Then click Next.

On the next page, you can see how the targets will work, and confirm your choices. Click Send to Schools.

The targets will then be sent to your selected schools for the selected assessments.

If you have the ability to log into a school site, you can view the targets from Students > Assessments > Annual Policy > School Expectations. Just click on the row of the relevant assessment.

How does this work with flat scale assessments?

Does your MAT use flat-scale assessments, where students are targeted at the same grade for every assessment period?

If so, there is a setting when adding automatic Attainment targets on school sites where you can tick the Same attainment target for each assessment period box to set the grade as the attainment target for every assessment period, rather than have students work towards this at the end of the year.

When rolling out targets from the MAT MIS, this setting isn't copied, so one you have rolled out your Attainment targets, you'll need to log into each school site, go to Students > Assessments > Annual Policy > School Expectations and click on the target setting to tick this box.

Colour-coding the marksheet for the assessments

Target Judgement rules determine how mark sheets are colour coded, depending on how your students are doing in their assessments relative to their targets, giving you a clear visual indication of students that might benefit from an intervention. You can set up as many Target Judgements as you need, and can change the names of your Target Judgements to align with the language you use at your school.

The judgements are automatically applied to marksheets (as long as a baseline, mark and target has been entered), with 4 default judgements: Above (dark green), At (light green), Slightly below (light yellow) and Significantly below (dark yellow).

You can see how to edit how many judgements there are and the colours for the assessment in your source school here: How the marksheet is colour coded - editing Target Judgement Rules

Before rolling out Target judgements

To be able to amend Target judgement rules in bulk, make sure:

  1. The assessments you want to set target judgement rules for have been set up on all school sites. If you haven't yet set them up on all sites, we recommend using our assessment policy rollout tool. You can also import them individually or set them up from scratch on each site if you prefer.
  2. Targets have been set for all the assessments on each site. You can use the School target rules roll out (shown above) or set them up from scratch on each site if you prefer using these instructions.
  3. Baselines and a current mark have been added to the assessments on each site. If these haven't been added, the colour-coding won't display until they are added.
