Unique Property Reference Number (UPRN) on Student Profiles and in other contact information

If available, Unique Property Reference Numbers (UPRNs) show alongside other address information wherever you see addresses, such as on Student, Staff and Guardian Profiles or in School Details. This guide explains what UPRNs are, how they are established and how to report on them.

What are UPRNs?

Unique Property Reference Numbers (UPRNs) are numeric identifiers (up to 12 digits long) given to each location and physical object with an address in Great Britain. UPRNS are published by the Ordnance Survey, and act like a "National Insurance number for properties" in the sense that they are permanently tied to a location from planning permission through to its demolition.

Unique Property Reference Numbers should not be confused with a Unique Pupil Reference Number (also referred to as a UPRN), which is another name for what is commonly referred to in Arbro as a UPN.

How are UPRNs set?

Unique Property Reference Numbers (UPRNs) are set automatically based on postal address information entered into Arbor. The information is matched to and validated with OS Map data, and if a valid match is found, the UPRN on record with Ordnance Survey is surfaced together with the address each time you click on it. If no reliable match is found, the field will remain blank, so you may notice that not all addresses have a UPRN yet.

Can I change UPRNs?

Because this process is automatic and based on third-party data, the only way to adjust a UPRN is to adjust the address data it is derived from.

  • If an address is changed, its UPRN is cleared automatically.
  • A new UPRN is re-added once the updated address is successfully validated through OS map data. This may not be instantaneous.

How can we see UPRNs?

To see the UPRN for an address in Arbor, simply go to the page the address is stored on (for example, a student profile), and click on the address.

On the slide that opens, you will see the full details of the address, including a UPRN if one was found.

Can we report on UPRNs?

Yes, it is possible to report on UPRNs in the custom report writer. A Postal Address (UPRN) field is now available in the Contact Details category, allowing UPRNs to be reported as a standalone column in reports about students, staff or contacts. If you report on a full postal address in the Custom Report Writer, UPRNs (if available) are also shown in those columns.
