How to resolve the error

To resolve this error, ensure that students have at least one language marked as their First Language.

A student's First Language is distinct from their Native Language. Even if a student has a native language set, they also need a language set as their First Language to remove error 1840.

For a single student

On a student profile, you can:

  • Scroll to the Language Abilities & Teaching section
  • Click on the language you want to set as their First Language or click +Add to add a new language (if needed)

  • Click Edit on the slide-over (for an existing language only)
  • Tick the Is First Language box and make sure the other details are correct
  • Click Save Changes
  • Regenerate your census

In bulk

  • Head to Students > All Students > Bulk Update > Bulk Update Basic Details.
  • (Optional) Filter the table for students with no First Language
    • Click the three vertical dots above the First language column
    • Select Column filter
    • Untick the boxes untill only (Blank) is ticked

  • Tick the boxes next to the students you want to update. The students you select will all get the same language settings applied. If you have variations of Language, Native Language and First Language you want to apply to different sets of students, make the updates in batches.
  • Use the Bulk Action to select Bulk Set Language
  • Set the Language details, including First Language, on the slide-over
  • Click Save Changes
