We understand that in some schools there are systems that work for the pupils where they can ‘spend’ their behaviour points as part of a rewards system. Since this feature is not linked to Payments or School Shop in Arbor, where card transactions and other payment methods are used, we recommend setting up a behaviour point spending system using Point Award Scales and Reports to help monitor it.
Permissions
- Behaviour: Behaviour Policy or School: Action: Behaviour: Administer - Set up and edit behaviour setup
- Behaviour: Administer/View My Students - Log behaviour and see totals for students you teach
- Behaviour: View All Students - View statistics and point tallies
- Behaviour: log point award - Give to any staff to record behaviour points outside the classroom, but not edit anything
- School: General Admin: Export Data - Create and manage custom reports in Custom Report Writer.
Step 1 - Setting up the Point Scale
First, head to Students > Behaviour > Behaviour Setup > Point Awards (tab)
Click +Add to add a point scale; this may be in addition to other point award scales, such as a positive and negative scale.
In the example above, we have Behaviour Points (negative points for adverse incidents) and Achievement Points (positive points for positive behaviours.
We then have a third scale, which we have called Reward points. In this example, we have set the directionality to positive, as it will then just show the number of points when they ‘spend’ them.
When setting up this scale, you can choose whether it has a positive or negative directionality, but we recommend that it’s not neutral.
The minimum point award can be entered as your lowest ‘cost’ item that they can spend their points on, and the max point award should be the highest ‘cost’ item that they can ‘purchase’.
Once this third scale is set up, you can click back onto it and click the grey ‘Manage Point Award Scale’ button. Under the Reasons/Attributes area, you would add in the items that the pupils can ‘buy’ and how many points they’re worth, like in the example shown here:
Step 2 - Recording ‘spending’ points
Once everything is set up, you can record when students spend their points. When doing this, you can either record points from your Favourites on the homepage or by going to Students > Behaviour > Point Awards > Recent.
Just make sure to select the correct scale, like in the example below, the ‘Reward Points’ have been selected in the Point award scale* field.
Step 3 - Reporting on points
Firstly, you can report on points and see pupils' point records in Students > Behaviour > Point Awards > Recent
And you can see their Point Award Totals in Students > Behaviour > Point Awards > Totals
Additionally, you can build a report in the Custom Report Writer.
Build a report with a focus on Students in Step 1. When it comes to Step 3 and choosing your report fields/columns, you can include your different point award scales to view the totals.
If you wish, you can also add an advanced calculation formula field, where you would create a formula based on your positive points and then deduct your ‘spending’ points (in this example, the Reward Points) to view a tally of the student's spendable points balance.
As you can see in the following example, we have a report that shows the pupils’ names, any additional information, such as their form group, and then columns for their Point Award Scales.
