What are the different summative assessment targets?

Arbor uses several types of targets in our Summative Assessments. Understanding the different types are key when setting up your assessments for the academic year.

Predicted mark baseline

The predicted mark baseline is carried over from the last predicted mark the previous academic year. So if a student is given a predicted mark of 4 in the summer term, their predicted mark baseline for next year will be 4.

  • It can be viewed from the Academic Unit Marksheet.
  • It can be viewed from the Summative Tracking marksheet.
  • It can't be viewed from the Baselines & Targets page.

Because this is a derived mark, it cannot be edited directly.

If no Predicted Marks are entered for subsequent assessment periods, the Predicted Mark Baseline will be used as the Predicted Final Mark.

Teacher target or Period target

Each Teacher Target (on the Baselines & Targets page) or Period Target (on the Academic Unit Marksheet) shows the mark a student should get at each assessment period, based on their Baseline and Year Target. This target is useful for tracking progress against teacher expectations to identify who needs more support.

When you first set up your Assessment and have added a Baseline and a Year Target, the Teacher Target or Period Target are automatically filled with targets showing progression. For example, if you have three termly periods, the Baseline is 3 and the Year Target is 6, the teacher targets will be 4, 5 and 6. The final Teacher Target will be the same as the Academic Year Teacher Target.

Predicted mark

This is input every assessment period and can be used to track changes in what the teacher thinks the student will achieve at the end of the assessment over time. It is used to set the Final Predicted Mark.

  • It can be edited individually from the Academic Unit Marksheet - make sure the date range in the filters only covers one assessment period. If the date range overlaps with more than one assessment period, you won't be able to edit the predicted mark
  • It can be edited individually from the Summative Tracking marksheet.
  • It can be edited in bulk from the Baselines & Targets page.

Predicted final mark

This represents the final grade that the teacher thinks the student will actually achieve.

  • It can be viewed from the Academic Unit Marksheet
  • It can be viewed from the Summative Tracking marksheet.
  • It can't be viewed from the Baselines & Targets page.

Predicted Final Mark is derived from other targets in a hierarchy.  The system prioritises targets in this order:

  1. Most recent assessment period's Predicted Mark
  2. If no Predicted Marks exist, Predicted Mark Baseline

This means if a student has no Predicted Mark entered for spring, but has 7 entered for Autumn, the Teacher target, the Predicted Final Mark is 7.

Suggested mark

If the assessment you have chosen is linked to a Curriculum, Arbor can suggest a mark for each student based on their curriculum results.

It is non-editable. It can be viewed from the Marksheet page only.

School target rules - Attainment Target and Progress Target

If you don't want to set Academic Year Teacher Targets for each student, you can set targets for all students in bulk.

  • Progress Target - Set a target based on how much progress students should make from their baseline. For example, students should make 1 grade level of progress compared to the baseline at the start of the year.
  • Attainment Target - Set a target all students in a particular group should reach, no matter their baseline. For example, all students should reach at least a grade 4 by the end of the year.

Academic Year Teacher Target

When you first set up your Assessment and have added a Baseline and a Year Target, the Academic Year Teacher Target will be the same as the Year Target. You can then edit this if necessary based on the Teacher’s observation and prediction - this could be the same as the Year Target, higher or lower based on the individual student. The adjusted Academic Year Teacher target will then become the Year Target.

It can be edited from the Baselines & Targets page. It is not displayed on the Marksheet page.

  • It can be viewed from the Academic Unit Marksheet.
  • It can be viewed from the Summative Tracking marksheet.
  • It can be edited individually or in bulk from the Baselines & Targets page.

Year target

This is what the student is expected to achieve at the end of the academic year, for example, what level a student is expected to achieve at the end of year 10. For students in their final year of the assessment, the Final target and the Year target will be the same.

The ‘year target’ is derived from other targets in a hierarchy. The system prioritises targets in this order:

  1. Academic Year Teacher Target - Individual target, manually set
  2. Progress Target - Calculated from the baseline and desired progress points
  3. Attainment Target - A set target for all students based on ARE (Age-Related Expectations)

This means if a student has no Academic Year Teacher target, the Progress target will be used, etc.

Aspirational target

This is a stretch target for what the student could achieve at the end of the academic year if the student does extremely well or excels that year in their studies. It is usually higher than the other targets.

  • It can be edited individually from the Academic Unit Marksheet
  • It can be viewed from the Summative Tracking marksheet.
  • It can be edited individually or in bulk from the Baselines & Targets page.

Final target

This is what the student is expected to achieve at the end of the course, based on analysis of prior attainment. It is usually set at the beginning of an assessment. For students in their final year of the assessment, the Final target and the Year target will be the same. For example: 

  • For secondaries, the overall grade a student is expected to achieve in their GCSE.
  • For primaries, the grade a student is expected to achieve in their end of Key Stage assessments.

It is editable from the Baselines & Targets page. It can be viewed from the Marksheet page.
