The article explains the Out of Age Group Cohort tag for students who are not in the expected year group based on their age. It details the age ranges for each year group and how the tag is applied, particularly emphasizing the importance of the academic year start date of August 31st. It also provides instructions on how to find a list of students with this tag in the system.
If a student is in a different year group to the one they would be expected to be in based on their age (sometimes referred to as decelerated), they will have an Out of Age Group Cohort tag on their profile.
This DfE article on the National Curriculum shows the expected ages for students in each year.
- For Nursery, this will only show if they are out of the range 0 to 4.999 years at the start of the Academic Year.
-
For Reception this will only show if they are out of the range 3 to 5.999 years at the start of the Academic Year.
- It is only from Year 1 onwards that the range is more restrictive - aged 5 to 5.999 at the start of the Academic Year for Year 1 and so on. If the student starts Year 1 and is 6 or above, they will be classed as Out of Age Group Cohort.
If they are not out of age for their cohort at the very start of the Academic Year, they will not flag as being Out of Age Group Cohort.
Please note: The DfE considers the start of the academic year to be 31st August. This means that a student who becomes the right age for the year group after that date will be classed as Out of Age Group Cohort.
For example, a student who is in Year 11 this year, who was 14 on the 31st August, will be classed as Out of Age Group Cohort as they should have been in Year 10. For Year 11, a student should be between 15 and 16 years old on 31st August, and for Year 10, a student should be between 14 and 15 on 31st August.
How do I find a list of my Out of Age Group Cohort students?
Go to Students > Demographics > Derived Indicators and select Educational Needs.
Click into the filters to select Out of Age Group Cohort.
You can also choose to show the inverse of the demographic - in this example, it would show you everyone who is not out of age group.
You can see a list of students, including their name, year group, registration form, and the dates they start and stop being this demographic.
You can download the table, click on a student to see more details, or jump to their profile.
