This article explains why some students may not be classified as compulsory school age, which generally applies to children aged 5 to 15. It details how a child's birthday affects their status, specifying the cut-off dates for when they are considered of compulsory school age based on the school term following their 5th birthday.
On many of our reporting pages, you can choose to view the data for students who belong to different demographic groups - one of them is students who are not compulsory school age.
In general, this usually means a child who is age 5 to 15, but whether a student 'counts' as 5 depends on when their birthday is compared with today's date.
A child reaches compulsory school age at the start of the first school term after their 5th birthday. This means that:
- Children who turn 5 between 1st September and 31st December will not count as compulsory school age until after 31st December.
- Children who turn 5 between 1st January and 31st March will not count as compulsory school age until after 31st March.
- Children who turn 5 between 1st April and 31st August will not count as compulsory school age until after 31st August.
