You may need to send a message to all students (or their guardians) who fall into certain demographic groups. You can do this by setting up a custom group.
For example, to send to all students who are Free School Meals, your custom group would be about current students.
Set up Automatic Membership Criteria to pull in students who are FSM=Yes.
When setting up an email, SMS, in-app message or letter, you can then select this group in the To box to send your message to. You'll be able to select the students or their guardians.
