This article covers common questions regarding Assignments in Arbor. If you cannot find an answer to your query in this article, check our dedicated section of the Help Centre on this topic here.
Can I set up a recurring/repeating assignment?
No, when you create an assignment, there is no option to repeat it. If you want to create an assignment that repeats each week, you will have to create these individually. You can submit feedback on this feature for the future using the Our Product Roadmap and how to submit ideas and improvements article.
Can a teacher set the same assignment for all of their classes?
Yes, if a teacher has more than one class they can assign the same assignment to all classes at once. You can see how to do this here: Creating an assignment for multiple classes.
Is there a way to notify students or guardians that there is a new assignment?
Although there is no way to send them a notification through Arbor, you could send them an email.
They will also see that there are new assignments to complete on their Arbor homepage.
Can we see which students have viewed their Assignments?
It isn't possible to view whether a student has read about the homework or assignments they have, you are only able to view whether it has been submitted or not, and any supporting documents.
However, you can track the last time the student has logged in, which will give a good indication of whether they may have seen the assignment. You can do this by creating a report in the Custom Report Writer.
Can we mark assignments as not required for students?
We don't have not required marks for homework assignments in Arbor, such as Absent or Not required (like you can for summative assessments).
If the student was not present, the teacher should mark them as 'submitted', because they have completed everything that was required of them.
If you'd like us to consider changing this in future, you can see how to submit your feedback here.
Can we mark all past assignments as complete to remove or hide them on the Portal?
You might have past homework assignments that are still showing as Waiting for submission or Overdue.
There isn't currently a way to automatically mark past assignments as submitted or completed in bulk, so you'd need to have teachers go into the assignment and mark them as completed.
However, there's no need to do this for assignments showing as Waiting for submission or Overdue for last year or prior. We hide these assignments at the start of the current academic year on the parent Portal/Arbor App and Student Portal.
Past assignments that have been set as submitted in the current academic year will be visible on the parent Portal/Arbor App and Student Portal.
Can we delete assignments in bulk?
No, it is not possible to delete assignments in bulk. These will need to be deleted one at a time. If you'd like us to consider changing this in the future, you can see how to submit your feedback here.
Can we archive assignments?
Assignments cannot be archived so that they disappear from the Parent Portal or App. However, on the Parent Portal/Arbor App and Student Portal, we show assignments that have a status of Waiting for submission or Overdue for the current academic year only. Any assignments from previous years with a status of Waiting for submission or Overdue will not show in the current academic year.
Parents will be able to see a list of all submitted assignments, including those that have been marked, from the students academic career, including previous years. Submitted assignments show in a section below any Assignments that are due, with the most recent submitted assignments at the top.
Why can't I set or see assignments for a whole year group or other classes?
In order to be able to see assignments for other classes, you will need to have the Assignments: Administer/View All Students. Alternatively, if you currently have the Assignments: Administer/View My Students, you can then be assigned as the Academic Lead of the course, and then you will be able to set/see assignments for that class. If you need permissions applied to your account, please refer to the guidance here to learn how to do this.
Parents are seeing lots of overdue assignments; how do we fix this?"
This will be due to the Submit via Arbor button not being ticked, so only a teacher can mark the assignment as submitted. This currently can't be defaulted on, so it needs to be manually ticked on creation of the assignment.
Please note: If you have the Submit By Arbor checkbox ticked, this will prevent you from marking the assignments as submitted in bulk. You will only have the options of "Waiting for student to submit" or "Not submitted" as the student needs to submit it through the Portal themselves.
Leaving the Submit by Arbor box unticked will mean you will then get the options of Submitted and Submitted late, as your students are unable to submit assignments via the Portal themselves.
Can we delete Assignments in bulk?
Whole-site bulk removal of assignments is a chargeable 2nd-line request and not a self-service action. Deletion of assignments is also irreversible.
