This article explains how to assign EAL (English as an Additional Language) status to a student's profile by adding their language abilities in the appropriate section of the student record.
Adding an EAL status
To add EAL status to a student's profile, you will need to go to the Language abilities section. The quickest way to find this section is by clicking the View drop-down menu, towards the top of a student's profile.
Click +Add and select Language Ability in the pop-up.
You can then select a language from the drop-down menu.
You can then choose whether this is the student's native language, by checking the Native Language box and then clicking Add Language Ability.
- If the child's native language is not English then you will get the EAL tag on the student record.
- If the student has multiple native languages, one of which is English, the EAL tag will still display.
Removing an EAL status
To remove an EAL status from a student's profile, you can go to the same All Sections > Language Abilities section as shown above.
As an EAL status is caused by either having multiple native languages, or not having English recorded as the native language, you have two options:
1. If there is another language on the profile, you can click on it, click Edit and then untick the Is Native Language box and then click Save Changes. You can also click Delete to remove the language ability record here if it is incorrect.
2. If no other language is recorded, click into the existing English language record and ensure that the Is Native Language box has been ticked.
